 Stoke

Things still aren't going as Sunderland wish. A dire performance at home against Stoke compounds the misery the fans are feeling and with another match looming on Saturday, this time against Wigan, fans can only hope effort is going on behind the scenes to get the players mentally focussed for matches that are quickly becoming "must win".

We came away from our first Premier League match of the year back at the Stadium of Light with a point, but also an underlying belief that what we took part in was not really football. Stoke have never been known as footballing pioneers but what took place on Monday night was a long stretch from the football we witnessed from the Lads in the good run early in the season this was anything but that.

Unconfirmed reports are a a species of bird are now near extinction and a low-flying aircraft said it also had to make an emergency landing following a collision with a ball. It was 90 minutes that defined the words dull and turgid but at least we got a point and it's a bit better than the “pathetic” I've been using for the past couple of weeks.

With another home match to Wigan, this time one that I am attending, on Saturday we can only hope that performance is much improved. We need a win and what better way to do it than over Bruce and Cattermole's old club, a club that we had much tension with during the period of taking their manager and brightest star? We can also send a message to a certain Mr. Maynor Figueroa to show him what he's missing by not signing for us.

Hopefully Steve Bruce sat the entire team down on the training pitch and spent one hour with the ball rolling it along the ground to another member of staff while the players took note on how the ball seemingly got to it's destination without leaving the turf. Something to do with the ball being a perfect sphere therefore able to roll along the turf without any untoward bobbles or deflections.
